Today: Sagasta and Logroño.
Our partners will stay at school with us today. At the end of the morning we will visit El Frontón del Revellín, Pelota time!!!!
There are a few things that can be found in every village in La Rioja or city, an outdoor fronton is one of them. Even the smallest village has at least one fronton, and in Logroño it is possible to have a fronton in different neighborhoods. There are also many indoor frontons that are used more often for professional matches. Many of the professional matches are broadcasted on TV stations.
San Millán de la Cogolla, A World Heritage Site!!!
Our British students have had the opportunity to visit one of our best treasures: San Millán de la Cogolla.
The monastic community founded by St Millán in the mid-6th century became a place of pilgrimage. A fine Romanesque church built in honour of the holy man still stands at the site of Suso. It was here that the first literature was produced in Castilian, from which one of the most widely spoken languages in the world today is derived.
Suso Monastery, The cenobium, which is the monastery’s nucleus, is Visigoth, built in the year 550, making it one of Spain’s oldest. San Millán did his lent penance in its caves. In the 10th century it was inhabited by Mozarab monks and the horseshoe arch in its main doorway and the square chapels inside date from this period. The building has two naves, separated by horseshoe arches. In 964 the Iberian Peninsula’s first encyclopaedic dictionary was written here: the Emilianense 46 Codex. In the 13th century, Gonzalo de Berceo wrote the first poems in the Spanish language. His remains lie in the Romanesque chapel
Yuso Monastery, In the early 16th century the community was housed in the fine new monastery of Yuso, below the older complex; it is still a thriving community today.

ATAPUERCA, Burgos. A world Heritage Site!
Our students are already having fun in Atapuerca.
The Sierra de Atapuerca sites provide unique testimony of the origin and evolution both of the existing human civilization and of other cultures that have disappeared. The evolutionary line or lines from the African ancestors of modern humankind are documented in these sites. The earliest and most abundant evidence of humankind in Europe is found in the Sierra de Atapuerca. The sites constitute an exceptional example of continuous human occupation, due to their special ecosystems and their geographical location. The fossil remains in the Sierra de Atapuerca are an invaluable reserve of information about the physical nature and the way of life of the earliest human communities in Europe. In addition, painted and engraved panels have been recorded, with geometrical motifs, hunting scenes, and anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figures.
It is a sunny lovely day!!!
Archaeological Site of Atapuerca
The caves of the Sierra de Atapuerca contain a rich fossil record of the earliest human beings in Europe, from nearly one million years ago and extending up to the Common Era. They represent an exceptional reserve of data, the scientific study of which provides priceless information about the appearance and the way of life of these remote human ancestors.
