Wednesday, San Millán and Santo Domingo

Today we have had the opportunity to visit San  Millán de la Cogolla the birth place of the Spanish language, declared a World  Heritage Site in 1997

A coach has taken us up the hill where a guide was waiting for us to explain not only the story of the building and its meaning, but also a lot of Spanish History that has to do with the monastery. The monastery is empty at the moment but it was San Millán the first hermit to live there

Then we have visited Yuso Monastery where the precious books are kept and considered the birthplace of modern written and spoken Spanish language as well as the first testimonies of the Vasc language.

We have then driven to nearby Santo Domingo de la Calzada a landmark on the Camino de Santiago, The Way to Santiago.

The students from the IES Camino de Santiago have shown us the town.  Then we have had luch at their school.  It has been a great lunch and a great day!!!!

Monday 19th, Their first day with us!

We have had a busy day today.  We have had breakfast at the school canteen all together!  Our first Tortilla de patata was waiting for us!

Then we have met the Headmaster, Mr. Abad,  at the events hall where he has welcomed all of us.

The tour of the school has been interesting, first the library with all their treasures, more than 31.000 books,  maps, engravings . . .

And then Professor Ms. Fernández has shown and explained to us the different showcases around the school and what it is inside them . . . some very peculiar things

The tour of Logroño and of the Gota de Leche building have been really stimulating.  We now know that Sagasta is at the heart of Logroño!

Tomorrow, if the weather permits, we will be visiting Atapuerca, Burgos, a World Heritage Site!!!

IRREGULAR VERBS

How would you encourage your students to learn vocabulary?

Make it easy
Learning a new language is always a difficult task, especially being a teenager who has to memorize a long list of new words that are incompressible. But there are always special tricks to encourage students to learn new words, such as games.

One of my favorite ones is the Irregular Verb List game. When students must begin to study ninety-five different verbs with three different columns, they easily give up. Then, it is when a teacher should help them. But how? By playing a game that they´ll love. Students should stand in a line in the class looking at the black board, afterward the teacher must ask them for a verb in Spanish. Then, the first student goes to the black board and writes the verb in three different columns. If the student has written the verb correctly, he/ she should go back to the same place in line. But if the student does not know the verb or makes a mistake, the following student goes to try it again. When the verb is correct, the student who wrote it properly passes as many positions as students who made a mistake. Students learn with the mistakes that others did and vice versa. What is more, they motivate each other like in a competition.

Another is through a text, because it is easier to make them look up in a dictionary for new words. Or to work with semantic fields, where all the words are connected through the meaning, so it is easier for them to guess the meaning of the new words.

To sum up, I have explained my three favorites ways to help my students to learn vocabulary with success. There are many ways to do it, but from personal experience, these are the best ones.
